Marco Island is known for its beautiful beaches, warm Gulf waters, and incredible wildlife but few residents capture hearts quite like its sea turtles. These gentle, ancient creatures return each year, making the Island one of the best places in Florida to witness nesting season as it approaches!

A Special Visitor Each Season

From May through October, the island’s beaches become active nesting grounds, primarily for loggerhead turtles. During this time, female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the sand. Many return to the same beaches where they were born decades earlier!

Meet the Loggerhead Turtle

Loggerhead sea turtles are the most common species on Marco Island. You can recognize them by their large heads and reddish-brown shells. These turtles can weigh up to 300 pounds and are powerful swimmers, spending most of their lives in the open ocean.

Despite their size and strength they face many threats, which makes protecting their nesting grounds incredibly important.

Nesting on Marco Island Beaches

Each nesting season, volunteers carefully mark and protect hundreds of turtle nests along Marco Island’s beaches. After about 50–60 days, tiny hatchlings emerge from the sand and instinctively make their way toward the water.

This journey is short but dangerous, which is why local conservation efforts play a critical role in helping these hatchlings reach adulthood

How You Can Help

If you’re visiting or living on Marco Island during turtle season, there are a few simple ways to help protect these incredible animals: Turn off beachfront lights at night (turtles rely on natural moonlight), fill in holes and flatten sandcastles before leaving the beach, keep a safe distance from nesting sites, and never disturb turtles or hatchlings.
