Marco Island, Mapped Out
Marco Island is a barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast, tucked between the Everglades and the open Gulf, 16 miles south of Naples. Fly into Fort Myers (RSW), and you're here in under an hour. Coming from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, it's about two hours by car.
The beaches are wide, the sand is white, and the Gulf water runs warm most of the year. Winter days average in the mid-70s. Summers are lush and tropical with afternoon rain that clears by sunset. The wildlife alone is worth the trip: dolphins in the passes, manatees in the backwaters, roseate spoonbills wading through the mangroves, and shelling on Tigertail Beach and the south end that draws collectors from across the country.
Marco is also the doorstep to the Ten Thousand Islands, one of the largest undeveloped mangrove estuaries in North America, and the western edge of Everglades National Park. The island itself is easy to navigate, with a walkable stretch of shops and restaurants and a dining scene that consistently surprises first-time visitors.

Marco Island FAQs
What are the best things to do on Marco Island?
Guided shelling trips to Keewaydin and Kice Islands, dolphin-watching boat tours, fishing charters in the Ten Thousand Islands, kayaking and paddleboarding through mangrove backwaters, sunset cruises, and beach days at Tigertail and South Beach. The island also has a nature preserve, a historical museum, and live music most nights during season. The Things to Do guide has the full list.
Is Marco Island worth visiting?
It's a barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast with wide, uncrowded beaches, warm Gulf water, and direct access to the Ten Thousand Islands. Smaller and quieter than Naples or Fort Myers Beach — that's the draw. Strong dining, good shelling, year-round fishing. Not a nightlife destination. A place where the beach, the water, and the restaurants do the work.
What is Marco Island known for?
White-sand Gulf beaches, shelling on barrier islands accessible only by boat, dolphin and manatee sightings, the Ten Thousand Islands wilderness, fresh Gulf seafood, and a tight-knit island community. The Marco Island Historical Museum houses the Key Marco Cat, one of the most significant archaeological finds in North America.
Does Marco Island have a visitor guide?
The Marco Review has been Marco Island's visitor guide since 1994. It covers restaurants, activities, lodging, shopping, events, and local services in print (available at 70+ locations on the island), online at marcoreview.com, and through a free mobile app.
Where are the best restaurants on Marco Island?
Marco Island has waterfront seafood houses, upscale dining rooms, and casual tiki bars with live music. Many of the best-known spots sit along the water with sunset views. The Marco Review's Dining Guide includes editor-curated collections for seafood, sunset dining, family-friendly spots, and local favorites.
What is the best time to visit Marco Island?
Peak season runs December through April — dry weather, mid-70s to mid-80s, and the busiest stretch for hotels and restaurants. May through November is quieter, warmer, and less expensive. Shelling tends to be better off-season because fewer people are on the beaches. Hurricane season runs June through November.
