Keewaydin Island
You can reach Keewaydin Island by either renting a boat from a local marina, taking one of several local eco boat tours or Hemingway Water Shuttle (see below for phone #) offer a regular service from Rose Marina on Bald Eagle Drive. Keewaydin is a sparsely inhabited barrier island just north of Marco with a wonderful eight mile long sandy beach on the Gulf side. You can rent chairs from Hemingway and there are food and ice cream boats which service this island too, so it makes for a great family outing.
You can choose between the inter-coastal side of the island (where all the boats dock at the weekend) or the ocean side which is just a short walk away and offers the chance for long walks on the beach in complete solitude where the shelling is wonderful. The great thing is you can experience both.
However you choose to reach Keewaydin Island, have fun, don’t forget sunscreen, water and shelling bags. Leave nothing behind except your footprints.
