Otter Mound Preserve
This 2½ acre preserve and property surrounding it, was a home site for early settlers in the Caxambas village working in Marco’s clamming industry. The “mound” was constructed by the Calusa native inhabitants from oyster, clam and lightning whelk shells and dates between 700 AD and 1200 AD. There is a small parking area and a bike rack at the entrance with a nature trail, with benches and interpretive signs, looping through the preserve allowing views of the historic whelk terracing along its path.
